01

Short-term residence permit L EU/EFTA

The EU/EFTA short-term residence permit is intended primarily for employees with an employment contract for a period of at least three months and a maximum of one year, as well as for job seekers for a stay of more than three months. Students also receive a permit for one year, which is then extended from year to year until the regular completion of their studies. The period of validity of the permit issued to employees corresponds to the duration of the employment relationship. The permit may be extended or renewed.

02

Residence permit B EU/EFTA

Residents are foreigners who stay in Switzerland for a long time, for a specific purpose, with or without gainful employment. The residence permit is valid for five years and can be extended. It is issued primarily to employed workers with an employment contract lasting more than one year or of indefinite duration. Self-employed workers who wish to settle in Switzerland are entitled to a residence permit of the same duration, provided they demonstrate effective self-employment. Persons who are not gainfully employed also obtain this permit, which is valid for five years, provided they have sufficient financial resources to cover their needs and comprehensive health and accident insurance.

03

Permit for cross-border workers G EU/EFTA

This is a specific title issued to cross-border workers employed in Switzerland or self-employed with headquarters in Switzerland. The validity period of this permit corresponds to that of the employment contract provided that it is more than three and less than twelve months. If the employment contract is established for a duration of more than one year or indefinite, the permit is issued for a validity of five years.

04

Residence permit C EU/EFTA

The conditions for issuing this permit are not dependent on the AFMP. It is issued by the Swiss authorities on the basis of treaties and settlement agreements or on grounds of reciprocity. Its duration is indefinite. Citizens of Western European member states of the EU and EFTA in principle obtain a settlement permit after five years of residence in Switzerland.

APPROACH

Admission criteria for non-EU/EFTA citizens

The only non-EU/EFTA nationals who are admitted to work in Switzerland are executives, specialists and other qualified workers. Their admission must be in the overall interest of the Swiss economy. Qualified persons are those with a university degree (from a university or a university of applied sciences) and several years of professional experience. Depending on the profession or specialization, persons with special technical training and several years of professional experience are also admitted.

Foreign workers are entitled to the same salary and working conditions as Swiss citizens.

Third-country nationals may only be admitted if there is no Swiss candidate or a candidate from an EU/EFTA member state who meets the required profile. The admission of workers from third countries is limited.
